Description: Highly accessible virtuosic concerto for just about every mallet instrument available. The six movements cover a wide variety of styles and sound worlds. The three Psychotic Episodes are atonal, almost tocatta-style marimba pieces. The Romanza makes extensive use of extended tertian and quartal/quintal jazz harmonies and the solo part is crafted to give the impression of improvisation. The finale movement, Variations, is a flashy demented virtuosic movement that gives the soloist a chance to showoff their mallet chops. The xylophone is the primary instrument of this movement but there are multiple solos for vibraphone, glockenspiel, and crotales as well.
Concerto for Percussion no. 2 was first performed November 17, 1999 by members of the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra in Jordan Hall, Boston.
