Concerto Grosso no. 1, op. 12
duration: ca. 3:50
Instrumentation
trombone, timpani, piano soli and strings with harp
Description: tempo allegro barbaro, this movement alternates between a fast driving rhythmic motive with a slower lyric motive.
This work has gone through a few changes since its first performance in November 1998. The original scoring called for solo trombone, timpani and harp with strings performed by Samuel Getchell, trombone; Timur Rubenshteyn, timpani, Heather Kellgreen, harp and members of the NECSO conducted by Bill Drury. At this point, only the ritornello existed. After a rewrite, the harp solo was switched to a piano solo and this version of the ritornello (a sample clip of which is below) was performed on february 22, 2001 with Sam, Timur and Joe Johnson on piano with members of the NECSO. The final revision reinstated the harp but as a continuo instrument that plays with the strings. the second movement Elegy was performed in November of 2001 at Yale University.
